Resident Evil (2002)

In 7 words or less: Video game to movie survival horror

What's it all About? It had to happen. The inevitable game-to-movie scenario. Under the sleepy Racoon City lies The Hive, a base of operations for the secretive bioengineering pharmaceutical company, Umbrella. When a deadly virus is released in the facility, a team of commandos in sent it to sterilise the Hive. Caught in the middle is Alice (Jovavich), a former security guard with amnesia. Oh yeah, the virus has the unnerving capability of reanimating dead tissue. Ooo er misus.

Best bits? The laser beam corridor bit is a fun dose of slice and dice and the appearance of the dogs is a nice video game acknowledgement.

I don't trust her
Did it make you think thoughts? Is it horror? For the purpose of this review yes, it's sci-fi horror. Probably the least horrorful genre of the horror cannon but there you go. There are the usual attempts at suspense and 'jumpy' bits but they're just not that jumpy. It rattles along at a good pace and although predictable is fun nonetheless. It does finish with some unexplained questions but the ending means we were always going to get a sequel which I'm just about to watch now.

Would you watch it again? If it's tv and I can't find the remote sure.

The original game. This scene is not recreated
Rating (out of 100%): Not as bad as the general reviews lead you to believe, there's enough nice touches and references that if you're a fan of the video game series you're sure to enjoy. In fact I think I will dig out Resi 4 (the best of the series) on the Gamecube and experience some pure survival horror action. Come on you undead muthas!  Almost forgot to give this a rating. Let's go with an adequate 52%
