In 7 words or less: Fog Moves around.
What's it all About? Some fog appears off the coast of Antonio Bay, California harbouring some weird samiri looking people with red eyes who are meant to be 100 year old dead fisherman or something... Anyway, a nice, weird radio dj broadcasting from a lighthouse gets all up in the fogs guts and a couple of strange sex people (Jamie Lee Curtis being one of them) sort of get involved as well; but not really.
Best bits? The fog was nice. Foggy, thick, a good consistency of fog. I enjoyed all of the night scenes. The middle school drama department props are also a highlight. The ghost fishermen ninjas were cool; good 80s red eyes.
Did it make you think thoughts? The opening 20 minutes were great! Night setting, slow paced atmosphere building nicely, cool radio lady painting over the top of the visuals with her weird fake voice. Hang on, this is ticking all my ruddy boxes! Then... No. The whole middle act was sunny coastal towns, people driving around in cars (those nice American 80s numbers, you know, the ones with wood paneling down the sides) all a bit midsomer murders! The last 20 minutes were good again though.
12 minutes in I was still getting opening credits appearing on the screen. I thought that was worthy of note.
Classic editors of their time I'm sure |
Would you watch it again? Yeah, I suppose I might. I'd do the hoovering for the middle portion of the film though. The back of the Blu Ray makes me want to watch it again now... It masks the truth well.
This looks like a wild ride! |
Rating (out of 100%): Not one of Carpenter's best but still a nice 80s ghost story. Suffers from not having one single scare in its flabby gizzards... Oh, apart from Jamie Lee Curtis sleeping with a stranger after literelly just being picked up by him from the side of the road!! A terrifying, cheap error of judgment. 59%
