The Secret In Their Eyes (2009)

In 7 words or less: Retired fed unearths truths about unsolved case.

What's it all About? A retired federal justice agent decides to write a novel about a case from 20 years earlier, where many dramatic things occurred, involving his best friend, his boss (who he has always loved), a really nasty baddie and a young couple who are the victims of his shocking crime. It was 2010's Oscar winner for best foreign film.

Best bits? The scene that made me go 'wow' and rewind was the football stadium scene where the partners are on the hunt for the killer. The shot starts by flying towards the stadium from above before diving into the stadium following the football action and then up into the stands for a close up on Espositio! All one shot! Amazing stuff, and what follows is a very exciting and cool chase scene through the underbelly of the stadium, def one of the best chase scenes i've seen in a while and i really want to know how they shot that long take.

The main character Esposito is a cool anti-hero, his partner Sandoval is funny, loyal and tragic. The baddies are real shits and the victims husband is interesting, realistic in playing out his grief and intriguing enough that you want to know what he's up to.

It's shot beautifully and it's cool seeing Argentina in the 70's, there's a sense of lawlessness and injustice bubbling underneath where even our hero admits defeat in the face of government corruption.

The characters are played by the same actors 20 years apart and the 'old' make-up is a little unconvincing but it doesn't take anything away from the story.

Did it make you think thoughts? It's full of twists and turns and will have you guessing right up until the end. It's also a love story.

Would you watch it again? Sure would

Rating (out of 100%): 83% It's a tight crime mystery with a funky twist and plenty of regret.
