Bridesmaids (2011)

In 7 words or less: Chick flick meets Anchor Man

Best bits? The best thing about this film is the attention to detail with the peripheral characters, they really make it. From the hysterical passenger on the plane to Matt Lucas and his odd sister taking a bath together and the weird little kid she meets on a blind date who tells her "my granny died where you're sitting. Right where your panties are", they all provide a lot of added LOLs and keep the film interesting and at times very random. I also have to give a mention to the groom's butch sister, Megan, who is a new breed of character to feature in a film like this and great to see. She's utterly relentless (see clip below) and so perfectly played, brilliant casting. And I've got give a nod to the scene where they all get food poisoning whilst trying on designer wedding gear ending in a lot of embarrassing pukes and poos. Pretty sure there's never been a chick flick before where a woman craps herself in a sink.

Did it make you think thoughts?
I thought 'at last, the new era of chick flicks is here'. Bridesmaids is evidence that you can still spin a good yarn about love and friendship without boring the audience to tears or giving in to predictable cliches. It also made think about dresses and weddings which ultimately girls love thinking about so that was nice. Plus it made me want to live in America for a bit - nice ariel shots of tempting sea cities.

Would you watch it again? Defo. This is a classic to watch with a nice bottle of wine and some girlfriends, or in fact your loved one - yes, Slumpy's Daddy, AKA Ben was chortling the whole way through. Bridesmaids has raised the bar in the category of chick flicks... There's a new female audience out thirsting for a good ol' romance but with a different style of humour and a strong snub to the usual dullness and this brings it. Chick Flicks of the future, you've got to step it up, you have been warned.

Rating (out of 100%): A cake topping 80%. Great laughs, interesting character and a touching storyline that doesn't dominate the effect with cheese. Only criticism is that it didn't need to be that long. We got it at 1.40, there was no need to prove yourself further, but I'll forgive you because of the pretty dresses, ahem, great jokes.
